Sony's "Spider-Man: Far from Home" was released on Tuesday in over 4,600 theaters, and it has already broken a record. With $39.2 million in its first day, it scored the largest Tuesday debut of all-time, a record previously held by "The Amazing Spider-Man" ($35 million). The MCU sequel is entering the weekend with hopes of taking in as much as $80 million over the weekend and around $125 million for the six-day total.

In an attempt at counterprogramming, A24 has released the R-rated horror film "Midsommar" on Wednesday. Written and directed by "Hereditary" filmmaker Ari Aster, the film stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor, and it has already picked up $1.1 million from Tuesday night previews, which is almost on par with "Hereditary" ($1.3 million). Launched into 2,588 locations, and expanding further on Friday, the film is expected to rake in between $9-15 million in its first five days.

Synopses, details, critical/audience reception, trailers, and more after the jump.

Official Synopsis

Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.
