Box Office: THE EQUALIZER Explodes With $35 Million Debut

box-office-the-equalizer

Antoine Fuqua's "The Equalizer" dominated the weekend box-office with a solid, $35 million debut. Based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, the Denzel Washington starrer scored the fourth best September opening ever, behind "Hotel Transylvania", "Insidious: Chapter 2" and "Sweet Home Alabama". With numbers like that, you can be sure that a sequel will get made.

This week's other wide release, the 3D stop-motion animated feature "The Boxtrolls" opened in third place with $17 million, the best ever debut for Laika Studios compared to "ParaNorman" ($14 million in 2012) and "Coraline" ($16.8 million in 2009).

In other box-office-related news, "Guardians of the Galaxy" has reached a domestic gross of $319 million, passing the first and second "Iron Man" movies and becoming the third highest-grossing film in the Marvel super-hero franchise, behind "Iron Man 3" ($409 million) and "The Avengers" ($623 million).

New Wide Releases: "The Equalizer", "The Boxtrolls".

Biggest Drop : "A Walk Among the Tombstones" (-66%)

Smallest Drop : "Guardians of the Galaxy" (-27%)
