The true story horror "The Conjuring" starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson opened at #1 this weekend with an awesome gross of $41M versus a $20M budget. You could say it was a surprise, but director James Wan has a good track record with small budget projects. His 2004 horror classic "Saw" grossed $103M worldwide and only cost $1M to make, while the 2011 supernatural horror "Insidious" had a budget of $1.5M and ended up grossing $97M worldwide. It's no wonder Wan is moving up in Hollywood and was hired to direct "Fast & Furious 7".
The Dreamworks animated feature "Turbo" only managed $31M over 5 days (Release Date: July 17) and occupied a rather weak third place in the top 10. Since the film cost $135M, it's not a great achievement and the film will likely struggle to reach $100M in the next few weeks.
The action comedy "RED 2" boasting an all-star cast which includes Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins, failed to improve on the box-office performance of its predecessor. The film grossed $18.5M in its opening weekend, slightly less than 2010's original "RED" which opened with $21M. While the first one grossed $200M worldwide, this sequel looks to end its theatrical run with much less, which will most likely hinder plans for a trilogy.
And now we move on to the real flop of the week: "R.I.P.D." This "Men in Black" rip-off fantasy actioner starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds opened at #7 with an embarrassing $12.7M which is definitely bad news considering that the film cost $130M to make. It's very obvious that it won't be able to recover its budget during its theatrical run and it's very possible that the DVD and Blu-Ray sales won't help, either.
More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.
