Home-invasion horror just received a major boost at the box-office as the genre flick "The Purge", starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, surged to the top spot this weekend with an unexpected gross of $36M, which is more than great considering that the movie cost only $3M to make. Initial expectations placed the movie somewhere in the vicinity of $20M, but after it grossed $16M on Friday alone, it was clear that "The Purge" would be a sleeper hit. "The Internship" which re-teamed Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn for the first time since 2005's "The Wedding Crashers", couldn't make much of a box-office dent. The comedy opened at #4 with a weak $18M versus a $58M budget.
"Fast & Furious 6" had to drop down to second place, but it's still going strong with $19.7M over the weekend and a worldwide total that is close to the $600M mark. M. Night Shyamalan's box-office bomb "After Earth" sank to #7 after last week's disappointing opening weekend and only managed to rake in a total of $46M domestically and another $48M internationally. Sony was hoping that the sci-fi adventure could reedem itself internationally, but even though the studio will eventually recoup their investment, they won't make much of a profit and the outlook for the planned trilogy is grim.
More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.
