Jennifer Lopez has joined the cast of "The 33", the true story of the 33 Chilean miners who were rescued after being trapped underground for 69 days in 2010. The cast already includes actors Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro ("300"). The film is directed by Patricia Riggen ("La Misma Luna") from a screenplay written by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera ("Motorcycle Diaries"). Producer Mike Medavoy ("Shutter Island", "Black Swan") acquired the rights to the story of the 33 mine workers back in 2011, and the filmmakers had been looking for financing at last month's Cannes Film Festival. Here is what Medavoy had to say about the story:
"Like millions of people around the world, I was completely engrossed watching the rescue at Copiapo. At its heart, this is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the courage and perseverance of the Chilean people. I can't think of a better story than this one to bring to the screen."
