The champion of last weekend's box-office turned out to be the Jackie Robinson biopic "42" starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford. The film, written and directed by Brian Helgeland ("L.A. Confidential", "Mystic River"), opened at #1 with $27 million in its first three days, quite profitable considering it was made on a $40 million budget.
The other wide release of the week, "Scary Movie 5" scared away most of its fans, which resulted in a weak $15 million opening, although it did land at #2 and it only cost $20 million to make. Even so, it's the weakest in the entire series. The first "Scary Movie" scored $42 million in its opening weeekend (2000), the second came closest to hitting bottom with $20 million (2001) in its first 3 days, while the third and fourth started to improve their weekend numbers with $48 million (2003) and $40 million (2006), respectively. The large gap between "Scary Movie 4" and "Scary Movie 5" could be one of the reasons why the last installment underpeformed, but I suspect that the low quality of the movie itself is more to blame.
More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.
