The first trailer for the sci-fi thriller "Elysium" directed by Neill Blomkamp ("District 9") has been released. The film stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, Sharlto Copley and William Fichtner and the story is set in 2159, a time when human society is divided: the wealthy live aboard the space station Elysium and the poor survive any way they can down on Earth, which is now an overpopulated and ruined planet. "Elysium" opens on August 9, 2013.
The trailer provides a great first look at the movie. There's plenty of both action and story, and the visuals are stunning. Blomkamp's "District 9" was thrilling and original, so the bar is set very high for "Elysium". The plot feels a bit more conventional than the director's previous film. Matt Damon plays a man who must must reach Elysium in order to find the cure that will save his life and becomes a savior of sorts for the desperate souls rotting away on Earth. This is quite a traditional motif for most dystopic science fiction works and it will be interesting to see how Blomkamp builds upon this foundation and if he can achieve something as memorable and fresh as "District 9", although it wouldn't exactly be fair to compare these two films, which are clearly different. I'm very excited about this project and if they pull it off, it will open new horizons for intelligent sci-fi movies.

Official Synopsis
"In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds."
