In Theaters : THE DESCENDANTS (2011)

Official Synopsis : From Alexander Payne, the creator of the Oscar-winning Sideways, set in Hawaii, The Descendants is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family's land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.

Genre: Drama, Comedy

What to Expect : An elegant mix of drama and comedy, something director Alexander Payne does extremely well. Just look at "About Schmidt" and "Sideways". His movies always craft a profound and often humorous vision of life with all its joys and trappings. Also, Clooney shines in the lead role.

Critical Response : Positive. The overwhelmingly favorable reviews pointed at the cast's commited performances (Clooney in particular) and Payne's poignant writing and directing. Although the script was received with mixed opinions, the general consensus is that "The Descendants" is an excellent addition to Alexander Payne's resume (his first movie since 2004's award-winning Sideways"). Rated 90% on Rottentomatoes.com from 82 positive and 9 negative.
