In Theaters : THE MIGHTY MACS (2009)

Official Synopsis : The Mighty Macs is based on the incredible true story of the 1971-72 Immaculata College team that started in obscurity but became the original Cinderella story in women's basketball. This team of pioneers went from barely making that inaugural tournament to the first dynasty in their game. And Cathy Rush (Carla Gugino), the woman that was ahead of her time, became immortalized when she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Genre: Drama, Sports

What to Expect : Yet another formulaic sports drama about winning against all odds. It's nothing spectacular, apart for the fact that they have managed to get a G rating, which I was sure was reserved for Disney movies and that it took the movie three years to get released. Adequate for a week-end lacking in feel-good entertainment.

Critical Response : Mixed. "The Mighty Macs" was regarded as nothing more than harmless well-meaning entertainment. This kind of story has been done to death, and a lot better, throughout the history of cinema and the critics penalized the movie for being too bland and cliched to make a difference. Some thumbs up for Carla Gugino's performance in the lead role, but that's about it. Rated 46% on Rottentomatoes.com from 17 positive and 20 negative reviews.
