In Theaters : THE HELP (2011)

Official Synopsis : The Help stars Emma Stone as Skeeter, Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny-three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed-even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Genre: Drama

What to Expect : An entertaining tearjerker with a solid cast that sets up the movie's bearings in a sea of stereotypes and cliches. Don't expect it to be a powerful eye-opening experience.

Critical Response : Mixed to positive. Indeed critics enjoyed the movie, but not entirely for its struggle against racism, but rather for being a well-staged and well-acted movie. In fact, it seems that the ensemble of actresses saved the movie from receiving harsher reviews. Major complaints regarded the movie's lack of authenticity and willingness to sidestep important issues. Still, most agreed that it is indeed an entertaining drama. Rated 74% on "Rottentomatoes.com" from 85 positive and 30 negative reviews.
