Synopsis (GETTYSBURG): Summer 1863. The Confederacy pushes north into Pennsylvania. Union divisions converge to face them. Two great armies will clash at Gettysburg, site of a theology school. For three days, through such legendary actions as Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge, the fate of "one nation, indivisible" hangs in the balance. Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, Richard Jordan and more play key roles in this magnificent epic based on Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Killer Angels, filmed at actual battle locations and rigorously authenticated down to the boots.
Synopsis (GODS AND GENERALS): Based on Jeffrey M. Shaara's bestseller, Gods and Generals recounts the fierce allegiances and combat of the early Civil War. Ronald F. Maxwell directs this epic prequel to his Gettysburg, framing the story with three bold men and three fateful battles. The men: Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels), "Stonewall" Jackson (Stephen Lang), Robert E. Lee (Robert Duvall). The battles: Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville. Through these combatants and conflicts we witness the bravery and strife of a nation at war with itself.

What to Expect : Epic and thorough war movie that Civil War enthusiasts will love. Everyone else might be a little put off by the extreme length and obsessive attention to details, but in all fairness this is an ambitious and fairly well put together reconstruction of the period and battles. The Director's Cut and Extended versions featured here are meant to enhance the storytelling, but the added length won't do much good when it comes to pacing issues. Still, it's a wonderful package, just in time for 150th Commemoration of the Civil War. If you're not into this sort of war movie, though, you're better off just renting the movies separately, extended or not.
