Official Synopsis : From writer/director Mike Mills comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. -Beginners- imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Melanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds) only months after his father Hal (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who - following 44 years of marriage - came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal's new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they'd ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.
What to Expect : A unique mix between subtle comedy and heartfelt drama, it's the kind of movie you'll absolutely love, or abandon ten minutes in. This unusual movie features the brilliant pairing of Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer on-screen, so at least that should be worth something.
Critical Response : This is just a limited release, but there were plenty of reviews, most of them positive. Joe Neumaier of New York Daily News calls it a"beautifully humane, sweet and intelligent movie that knows exactly what it is at every moment". Claudia Puig of USA Today mentions that "Laurent and McGregor are the year's most appealing screen couple, their scenes together so realistic they seem improvised". And here's a negative review from Stephen Whitty of the Newark Star-Ledge who argues that "All the gimmicks in the storytelling...can't camouflage the fact that the story itself was never quite worked out". The movie is currently 82% fresh on Rottentomatoes.com with 31 positive reviews and 7 negative ones.
