Box-Office Report - Week of 29 April 2011

The week of April 29 held no surprises, as the biggest opening movie, "Fast Five" turned out to have no serious competition. Other new releases like "Prom", "Hoodwinked Too!"or "Dylan Dog" made no impression on audiences. Let's check out the top 10 :

  • Taking 1st place by storm is "Fast Five" with a searing $83M in just three days, making it the best opening week-end for the "Fast & Furious" series. The largest opening so far was obtained by the fourth movie, with $70M in three days. The improvement is quite noticable. It was also the best reviewed movie in the series. The long-running series has finally started to pay off as audiences came to see the movie in unusually big numbers for a fourth sequel in a franchise. If only "Scream 4" could have seen these numbers. The Justin Lin directed action film will have no problem recovering its $125M budget as soon as next week, then moving on to as far as $200-250M, maybe even better, if it can hold on to its audience.

  • Far behind at #2 is "Rio" with $14M. The current 3-day cume is considerably smaller compared to the previous week's $25M, but its 17-day total is now at $104M, it has safely recuperated its $90M budget, and it will slowly move towards a $150-160M finish.

  • At #3 is Tyler Perry's "Madea's Big Happy Family", falling one spot and $15M from its $25M opening week-end, it has grossed only $10M in the current 3-day time frame. Though it's quickly losing money, Perry's movie is in no way a flop, as it has almost doubled its $25M budget. The total sum now is at $41M, and it looks to reach as far as $60-70M.

  • Also falling one spot, currently at #4, is "Water for Elephants". Losing 50% of its opening week-end gross, it only managed to rake in $9M in the last three days, bringing its 10-day total to a weak $32M. Made on a $40M budget, the movie is something of a flop. It might still finish somewhere around $60-65M, though its somewhat doubtful considering the summer movie season is here, which means the big names will start rolling in.

  • Disney's "Prom" opens directly at #5, pulling in a weak $5M in its first week-end. But, considering it was made on a small $8M budget, there wasn't much hope to begin with. On the other hand, what were they thinking, releasing this movie with competition like "Fast Five" rolling into theaters. The producers must have been suicidal.

  • Another new movie had a weak opening, "Hoodwinked Too!" at #6, with a disappointing $4M. Besides being a pointless sequel to a movie that was only mildly succesful, the animated feature had nothing to show for, except a witless script and low quality animation. Not the best two traits if you want your movie to be a big hit. The fact that it was also released in 3D did not help. The movie's $30M budget will be impossible to recover.

  • For a second consecutive week at #7, the true-story drama "Soul Surfer", has scored $3M this last week-end, bringing its 24-day total to $33.8M. The movie earns little, but has consistently remained inside the top 10 for 4 weeks now. Its $18M budget has almost doubled, and it still seems to be headed for a $40-45M finish.

  • Still at #8 is "Insidious" with a week-end cume of $2.7M. The horror movie, directed by "Saw" director James Wan, holds on surprisingly well. It's $1M budget cleared a long time ago, the movie will probably finish somewhere around $55-60M.

  • "Hop" seems to have lost its initiative, landing at #9 after last week's Easter revival. This week-end it only grossed $2.5M, an $8M drop from the previous week's three-day time frame. Its 32-day total now stands at $105M, which totally sinks my prediction of the movie finishing up at around $150M. With its poor performance this past week, it will go as far as $120M, and even so, probably outside the top 10. A weak finish for a movie that seemed to hold well at the box-office.

  • At #10, "Source Code" simply refuses to leave the top 10. Still going with a $2.5M gross this week-end and a total of $48M, the movie has done well for a sci-fi thriller with no particular mass appeal and will have no problem reaching $55M and beyond. However, next week it will surely leave the top 10. I know I said that last week, and I was wrong, but really, what are the chances of three consecutive weeks at #10.

The movies that exited the Top 10 are : "Scream 4" after a very disappointing run, "African Cats" after only one week-end in the top 10, and "Hanna".
