The 68th Annual Golden Globes Awards confirmed that "The Social Network" is on a winning streak, taking home the gold in four major categories : Best Picture - Drama, Best Director (David Fincher), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and, most surprising, Best Original Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). Since Fincher's opus has already won Best Picture/Director/Screenplay at the National Board of Review, the Boston and Washington Film Critics Association and the Critic's Choice Awards, it will probably also sweep the BAFTAs and the Oscars in these major categories. Pixar earns yet another Best Animated Film trophy with "Toy Story 3". The more promising candidates that went home empty-handed were "Inception", "127 Hours" and "Alice in Wonderland", despite earning several nominations in important categories.
In the acting categories, the leading actress award went to Natalie Portman for her powerhouse performance in "Black Swan" and leading actor to Colin Firth for "The King's Speech" (recognition long due for a wonderfull actor, in my opinion). In the supporting category, the honor was bestowed to Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, both for "The Fighter".
In television, "Glee" took the spotlight with three awards : Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy, while the award for Best TV Series - Drama went to the Scorsese produced "Boardwalk Empire". A surprise also occured in the Best Mini-Series category, as "Carlos" won over previous awards favourite "The Pacific".
The more emotional moments of the evening were focused on the great Robert de Niro accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award and Michael Douglas stepping onstage for the first time after his battle with cancer to present the award for Best Picture. On the flip side, the comic relief was once again ensured by british comedian and second-time Golden Globes host, Ricky Gervais and his arsenal of scathing jokes. There were a couple of times when he just went from humorous to downright mean, but at least he wasn't a stiff boring host, although his presence in future award shows might be in doubt. If you want to see a sample of Ricky's outrageous puns, check out this link : http://www.movieline.com/2011/01/watch-ricky-gervais-eviscerate-hollywood-at-the-golden-globes.php .
