Written and directed by Alex Garland ("Ex Machina"), the sci-fi thriller "Annihilation" is based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, which is the first book in the author's Southern Reach Trilogy.

The story follows a group of military scientists, played by Natlie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tuva Novotny and Tessa Thompson, who are tasked with exploring a mysterious quarantined area called The Shimmer where the laws of nature as we know them no longer apply.

"Annihilation" opened in theaters on February 23, 2018 and received generally positive reviews. The film grossed $11 million at the box-office in its opening weekend against a $40 million budget.
