FRANTZ (2016)
JUMP BACK TO TOP
Product Description: Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, (1914-1918), Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war s lost generation : Anna (21 year-old Paula Beer in a breakthrough performance), a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed during trench warfare, and Adrien (Pierre Niney, Yves Saint Laurent), a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town, placing flowers on Frantz s grave. Adrien's presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany s defeat, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz, conjured up in evocative flashbacks. What follows is a surprising exploration of how Ozon's characters wrestle with their conflicting feelings - survivor s guilt, anger at one s losses, the overriding desire for happiness despite everything that has come before, and the longing for sexual, romantic and familial attachments. Ozon drew his inspiration from Ernst Lubitsch s 1932 drama Broken Lullaby, with stunning visual references to painter Caspar David Friedrich.

THE SON OF JOSEPH (2016)
JUMP BACK TO TOP
Product Description: The American-born filmmaker Eugène Green exists in his own special artistic orbit. All Green s films share a formal rigor and an increasingly refined modulation between the playfully comic, the urgently human, and the transcendent, and they are each as exquisitely balanced as the baroque music and architecture that he cherishes. His latest movie, The Son of Joseph, is perhaps his most buoyant. A nativity story reboot that gently skewers French cultural pretensions, it features newcomer Victor Ezenfis as a discontented Parisian teenager in search of a father, Mathieu Amalric and Fabrizio Rongione as his, respectively, callous and gentle alternative paternal options, and Natacha Régnier as his single mother.

INQUISITION (1978)
JUMP BACK TO TOP
Product Description: In 16th century France, Inquisitor and magistrate Bernard de Fossey (Paul Naschy) travels to the plague-ridden region of Peyriac in search of witches and devil worshippers. Local beauty Catherine (Daniela Giordano) quickly catches his eye, tormenting him with impure thoughts, although her affections lie with her handsome fiancé Jean. Meanwhile, embittered one-eyed manservant Rénover (Antonio Iranzo) presents Bernard with his first group of torture victims when he accuses several sexy young things who spurned his advances of being witches responsible for the plague.
One by one beautiful women are tortured on the rack then burned at the stake. No-one seems able to halt the Inquisition's reign of terror or the baseless accusations that cause so many innocent deaths. When Jean dies in mysterious circumstances, Catherine allies herself with Satan to get revenge on her enemies - foremost among them, De Fossey himself.
This was horror star Paul Naschy's directorial debut and one of his very best films. He plays three roles - Inquisitor De Fossey, the Devil, and the Grim Reaper. The film is a brutal and unrelenting portrait of a past when superstition and terror ruled the minds of men.

THE GUMBALL RALLY (1976)
JUMP BACK TO TOP
Product Description: It’s fast, funny, outrageously illegal — and the granddaddy of the cross-country speed spectacles that have raced across movie screens in the past two generations. Put your pedal to the metal for The Gumball Rally. New York City is the starting point, and this supersonic contest ends 2,900 miles later in Los Angeles. In between, director Chuck Bail (coordinator of many classic movie stunt sequences) and a crew of actors and stuntpersons treat you to a truly breakneck road comedy. Gary Busey plays a daredevil in a 600-horsepower Camaro. Raul Julia portrays an Italian Grand Prix champ who’s also an incurable romantic in a fast Ferrari. Michael Sarrazin as the race’s crafty, overconfident organizer pilots a classic Cobra. Ready, set, zoom!

THREE SISTERS (1970)
JUMP BACK TO TOP
Product Description: In this faithful and compelling adaptation of Anton Chekhov s timeless classic, director Laurence Olivier demonstrates the same facility for cinematic expression that made his filmed versions of Hamlet and Richard III so definitive. In Olivier s assuredly brisk, graceful, meticulous, and witty rendering of Chekhov s masterpiece, the sisters (Joan Plowright, Louise Pernell, Jeannie Watts) are doomed to remain in their provincial purgatory, nearly a thousand miles away from their beloved Moscow. Intoxicated by yesterday s triumphs and heedless of tomorrow s disasters, the three sisters are left to sift through the debris of their shattered dreams on the eve of the social and political upheaval that will transform Russia forever.

RAT FINK (1965)
JUMP BACK TO TOP
Product Description: Surely, one of the most exciting cinematic finds of the year was the discovery of a 35mm print of RAT FINK (1965). Considered lost for over 50 years, its original elements destroyed in a fire, a print was recently located in an old warehouse. The film, severely damaged by crippling arc burns, was successfully restored to its present condition by Retromedia and represents the final "missing link" in the stellar career of Oscar winning cinematographer, Vilmos Zsigmond (CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND). Cult director, James Landis (THE SADIST), skillfully employs Zsigmond's brilliant black and white imagery to bring RAT FINK's story of betrayal and murder to vivd life. The bizarre story of the film's history continues with its star, Schuyler Hayden, an enigmatic personality who mounted the production in an effort to achieve stardom after only appearing a spattering of small, inconsequential roles on TV. His performance here is outstanding, generating solid reviews from Variety and other showbiz journals. He was at one point compared to a young Warren Beatty.

THEY LIVE BY NIGHT (1948) - Criterion Collection
JUMP BACK TO TOP
Product Description: Legendary director Nicholas Ray began his career with this lyrical film noir, the first in a series of existential genre films overflowing with sympathy for America s outcasts and underdogs. When the wide-eyed fugitive Bowie (Farley Granger), having broken out of prison with some bank robbers, meets the innocent Keechie (Cathy O Donnell), each recognizes something in the other that no one else ever has. The young lovers envision a new, decent life together, but as they flee the cops and contend with Bowie s fellow outlaws, who aren t about to let him go straight, they realize there s nowhere left to run. Ray brought an outsider s sensibility honed in the theater to this debut, using revolutionary camera techniques and naturalistic performances to craft a profoundly romantic crime drama that paved the way for decades of lovers-on-the-run thrillers to come.
