"Live by Night" is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn't stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa's steamy rum-running underworld.

BEING THERE (1979)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Product Description: In one of his most finely tuned performances, Peter Sellers (The Pink Panther) plays the pure-hearted Chance, a gardener forced out of moneyed seclusion and into the urban wilds of Washington, D.C., after the death of his employer. Shocked to discover that the real world doesn’t respond to the click of a remote, Chance stumbles haplessly into celebrity after being taken under the wing of a tycoon (Oscar winner Melvyn Douglas), who mistakes his new protégé’s mumbling about horticulture for sagacious pronouncements on life and politics, and whose wife (The Apartment’s Shirley MacLaine) targets Chance as the object of her desire. Adapted from a novel by Jerzy Kosinski, this hilarious, deeply melancholy satire marks the culmination a remarkable string of films by Hal Ashby (Harold and Maude) in the 1970s, and serves as a carefully modulated examination of the ideals, anxieties, and media-fueled delusions that shaped American culture during that decade.

WON TON TON: THE DOG WHO SAVED HOLLYWOOD (1976)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Product Description: Set in Hollywood circa 1923, Won Ton Ton, The Dog Who Saved Hollywood is a light-hearted spoof that tells the tale of a multi-talented mutt who, in the tradition of Rin Tin Tin, wags his way out of the kennel and onto the silver screen thanks to Estie Del Ruth (Madeline Kahn, Paper Moon), a starlet in search of a break, and studio bus driver and would-be director, Grayson Potchuck (Bruce Dern, The Trip). In no time flat, Won Ton Ton becomes the toast of the town and the reigning star of New Era Studios under the watchful eye of studio head J.J. Fromberg (Art Carney, Harry & Tonto). PROPERTY IS NO LONGER A THEFT (1973)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Product Description: Having tackled the corrupting nature of power with Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion and taken an angry, impassioned look at labour relations with The Working Class Goes to Heaven, Italian master Elio Petri next turned his attentions to capitalism for the darkly comic Property is No Longer a Theft. A young bank clerk (Flavio Bucci, the blind pianist in Dario Argento s Suspiria), denied a loan by his employer, decides to exact his revenge the local butcher (Ugo Tognazzi, La Grande bouffe) who is not only a nasty, violent, greedy piece of work but also one of the bank s star customers. Quitting his job, the clerk devotes all of his time tormenting the butcher, stealing his possessions one-by-one, including his mistress (Daria Nicolodi, Deep Red). Told in an off-kilter fashion by Petri, abetted by the woozy sound design and another outstanding score by Ennio Morricone, Property is No Longer a Theft presents a caustic, blackly comic look at a corrupt society.

MULTIPLE MANIACS (1970)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Product Description: The gloriously grotesque second feature directed by John Waters is replete with all manner of depravity, from robbery to murder to one of cinema’s most memorably blasphemous moments. Made on a shoestring budget in Waters’ native Baltimore, with the filmmaker taking on nearly every technical task, this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the Cavalcade of Perversion, a traveling show mounted by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair. Starring Waters’ beloved regular cast the Dreamlanders (including David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, Susan Lowe, George Figgs, and Cookie Mueller), Multiple Maniacs is an anarchic masterwork from an artist who has doggedly tested the limits of good taste for decades.

Product Description: Inspired by the writings of Jules Vern, Blast-Off (aka Those Fantastic Flying Fools) brings together a host of American and British entertainment icons in a comedy-adventure that pays homage to the inventive slapstick mashups The Great Race and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.

Burl Ives (The Big Country, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) stars as P. T. Barnum, the blustering showman who at first balks at, then embraces the idea of a projectile which could travel to the moon. And if anyone is going to make sure that America reaches the moon first, it’s Phineas T. Barnum! The eccentric cast of characters that populate Blast-Off include the nefarious Sir Harry Washington-Smythe (Terry-Thomas, How to Murder Your Wife), his equally devious brother-in-law Sir Charles Dillworthy (Lionel Jeffries, Camelot), the dashing young American Gaylord Sullivan (Troy Donahue, A Summer Place) and Madelaine (Daliah Lavi, Casino Royale), Gaylord’s voluptuous paramour.
