LITTLE FICTIONS (Elbow)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Artist:
Elbow

Genre:
Alternative Rock

Total Length:
48:28

Label:
Concord Records

Purchasing Links:
MP3, CD

Product Description: 'Little Fictions' was recorded in Scotland and Manchester and sees the band collaborate with the string players of The Hallé Orchestra, the Hallé Ancoats Community Choir, members of London Contemporary Voices and session drummer Alex Reeves. As with the previous three elbow albums it was produced by Craig Potter.

'Little Fictions' is emphatically a band album. Having written individually for its chart-topping predecessor, 'The Take Off and Landing of Everything', sessions this time were collective affairs, with all four members gathered initially in a house in Scotland before moving to Guy's attic in Prestwich and finalising recordings in the familiar setting of Blueprint studios, Salford.

'Little Fictions' is an upbeat album. All the band talk of the sessions being 'joyful', guitarist Mark Potter summarises it as 'the sound of four people who love what they do and each other', of an album that came into being naturally and, at times even unconsciously. Lead single 'Magnificent (She Says)' was embraced for the joyous, thrilling piece of music it is, positive and outward looking. Mark never even considered his audible switch towards electric guitars, most notable on the psychedelic lushness of 'All Disco', until the very end of the process.

Product Description: Sampha hails from Morden, south London and has spent the last six years generously dividing his musical talents across solo and collaborative work. In addition to his own revered solo releases (his debut Sundanza EP, 2013’s Dual EP and “Too Much / Without You” single), Sampha contributed majorly to SBTRKT’s acclaimed debut and follow up Wonder Where We Land as co-writer and featured vocalist, and went on to tour worldwide as half of the SBTRKT live show (spanning Glastonbury, Primavera, Coachella, Brixton Academy, Terminal 5...) Equally in demand as a songwriter, singer, producer and player, Sampha has been sampled by and produced for Drake (“The Motion” and “Too Much ft Sampha”), Kanye West (“Saint Pablo ft Sampha”), Beyonce (“Mine ft Drake”), Katy B (“Play ft Sampha”) and FKA twigs (LP1 standout “Numbers”). He also remains a frequent collaborator in the Young Turks family and beyond; from remixing The xx and Chairlift to experimenting in sonics and structure as half of production duo Short Stories (alongside Koreless). Other significant partnerships include Jessie Ware on “Valentine” and Lil Silva (“Salient Sarah” + “On Your Own”).

Surfer Blood

Joyful Noise Recordings

Total Length:
37:58

Label:
Alternative Rock

Purchasing Links:
MP3, CD, Vinyl

Product Description: SURFER BLOOD are one of the best young indie-rock bands around, and their fourth album, Snowdonia, is their most ambitious effort yet. Overcoming adversity, the band has artistically grown and thrived. Following the departure of bassist Kevin Williams and guitarist Thomas Fekete (tragically lost to cancer in May), singer/guitarist John Paul Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz have rebuilt a talented lineup with guitarist Michael McCleary and bassist Lindsey Mills, all four alumni of the same high school in West Palm Beach, Florida. Pitts wrote specifically with the new band's talents in mind: "When I was writing I was thinking more about background vocals and harmonies. Lindsey and Michael are great singers, and I really wanted that to show in the songs. There are layers of vocals on almost every track, and the call-and-response parts between Lindsey and I are something totally new."

HEAVY META (Ron Gallo)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Artist:
Ron Gallo

Genre:
Alternative Rock, Indie

Total Length:
39:18

Label:
New West Records

Purchasing Links:
CD, MP3, Vinyl

Product Description: A few words from Ron Gallo “Heavy Meta is 11 tracks of lyrical confrontation and laughter for cynics laid down roughly on a bed of fuzz, chaotic structures and primal sounds evoked from a red Fender jaguar electric guitar - there is bass, there are drums and not much else besides the occasional icing (no artificial colors or dyes). It’s not comfortable and easily pinpointed and I’m sure that will create an issue for the desire for neat little boxes we have grown to love. I still don’t know what I’m doing and I plan on keeping it that way. Besides a couple of years of emotional and mental turmoil, loss, confusion, breakdown and internal growth what did all of that ever get me? Well, it gave me this record called “HEAVY META” and it is the first few findings from my guerilla treasure hunt for bullshit, both outside and within. Ethos meets pathos. The only thing I do know is that I want to use music to reflect the times and as a primary outlet for me to become a total psychopath on stage, challenge myself and talk about potentially heavy real world things, call you out, then maybe we can even hug after the show. I am forever grateful for this life and anyone that ever comes to a show, buys a record and wants to have a real conversation. I have no idea where things are going, but I know it’s best to grow with them and be okay with whatever happens. As for right now, it seems like a great time to wake up, put all of ourselves into it, acknowledge our own personal limitless value and beauty and if I can be any part in that, well then, awesome. Just the existence of a biography in someway makes it seem like my life is more interesting than your life - far from the truth. I am more interested in you, and how do we connect that to the WE; that is the reason why I put this stuff out there.“

OCCULT ARCHITECTURE, VOL 1 (Moon Duo)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Artist:
Moon Duo

Genre:
Indie Rock

Total Length:
46:58

Label:
Sacred Bones Records

Purchasing Links:
CD, MP3, Vinyl

Product Description: Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then the Occult Architecture of Moon Duo's fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light. Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything, Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang. In Chinese, Yin means "the shady side of the hill" and is associated with the feminine, darkness, night, earth. Following this logic, Vol. 1 embraces and embodies Moon Duo’s darker qualities - released appropriately on February 3, in the heart of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

AFTER THE PARTY (The Menzingers)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Artist:
The Menzingers

Genre:
Rock

Total Length:
44:52

Label:
Epitaph

Purchasing Links:
CD, MP3, Vinyl

Product Description: For their fifth full-length After the Party, The Menzingers set out to make the quintessential jukebox record: an unstoppably melodic album primed for bar-room sing-alongs. Delivering anthemic harmonies, furious power chords, and larger-than-life melodies, the Philadelphia-based garage-punk four-piece amply fulfills that mission while achieving something much more deeply nuanced. With its delicately crafted storytelling and everyman romanticism, After the Party ultimately proves to be a wistful but life-affirming reflection on getting older but not quite growing up. “We spent our 20s living in a rowdy kind of way, and now we’re at a point where it seems like everyone in our lives is moving in different directions,” says Tom May, who joined fellow singer/guitarist Greg Barnett, bassist Eric Keen, and drummer Joe Godino in forming The Menzingers as teenagers in their hometown of Scranton. With each song unfolding as its own fully realized story, After the Party came to life thanks largely to an introspective yet outward-looking lyrical sensibility on the part of Barnett and May. Produced by Will Yip (Title Fight, Balance & Composure, Pianos Become the Teeth) and recorded in Yip’s Conshohocken, Pennsylvania-based Studio 4, After the Party finds the band breaking into new sonic terrain. The Menzingers’ most refined album to date, After the Party was also shaped from an intensive writing and pre-production process that involved holing up for five weeks in Yip’s studio. Along with sculpting more expansive arrangements, the band focused on experimenting with new effects and production techniques to forge the album’s dynamic but intricately textured sound.

Product Description: There's an old saying, "you're only as good as the company you keep." If that's the case, then Dave Hause is in great shape. Having spent the last 3 years on tour with The Gaslight Anthem, AFI, Frank Turner, Social Distortion, Chuck Ragan, Lucero, and The Bouncing Souls, it's safe to say that Dave Hause is doing something right. Dave is back with a new full length, “Bury Me In Philly” and it’s a solid progression from his previous album, “Devour” which received wide praise from fans and critics alike. "Bury Me In Philly" has been on many people’s “most anticipated releases of 2017” lists and it definitely won’t disappoint. “Bury Me In Philly” is easily Dave’s best work to date. It’s raw and emotional, and is sure to become a staple, “must have” album in the adult punk rock community.

BIG MACHINE (Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Artist:
Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band

Genre:
Folk

Total Length:
49:33

Label:
Topic Records

Purchasing Links:
CD, MP3, Vinyl

Product Description: Pioneering English traditional folk powerhouse, Eliza Carthy first assembled the Wayward Band in 2013 in order to explore and celebrate her long and varied career in folk music. Since then, the band has become a festival favorite, and Eliza has been awarded the MBE for services to folk music. Eliza and the Wayward Band loved playing together so much it seemed natural and inevitable, as well as characteristically ambitious, that this 12-piece would set about recording an album. Early in 2016 they did just that. Big Machine is the result and the renowned Real World and Rockfield Studios are where it all happened. Big Machine, produced by Jim Sutherland, represents a healthy slice of everything good that is happening in traditional music now, across a sparkling spectrum of sound. The album features three contemporary songs; Eliza's own 'You Know Me' about the migrant crisis and notions of hospitality (featuring MC Dizraeli), a powerful cover of Ewan Maccoll's Radio Ballad 'The Fitter's Song' (at the behest of Peggy Seeger - and the song which inspired the album title) and an affectionate reworking of 'Hug You Like a Mountain' (Rory MacLeod), re-imagined here as a duet with Teddy Thompson. There are also several examples of the Broadside ballad collections housed in Chetham's Library in Manchester given a new twist with music by Eliza and the band. Big Machine is one of Eliza Carthy's most adventurous and accomplished works to date - and given that Eliza is the most passionate and groundbreaking English traditional singer of her generation, Big Machine is an album you really won't want to miss.
