New on DVD and Blu-ray: November 15, 2016

new-on-dvd-and-blu-ray-november-15-2016

This week on DVD and Blu-ray, Disney released a strong holiday offensive with "Finding Dory" and the 3D Collector's Editions of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "The Jungle Book". Other new releases include the Nicolas Cage comedy "Army of One" and the drama "Cardboard Boxer" starring Thomas Haden Church and Terrence Howard.

New TV releases on DVD and Blu-ray are few this week, but pretty big: the sixth season of "Game of Thrones" and the second season of "Better Call Saul". Also, check out HBO's "Looking" complete series and movie.

It's a pretty great week for classic films, though. New blu-ray releases include "Space Jam: 20th Anniversary Edition", "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams", "Punch-Drunk Love", "Citizen Kane: 75th Anniversary", "Dead Ringers: Collector's Edition" and many more.

Check out all the new movies, TV shows and classic films released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 15, 2016 after the jump.

AKIRA KUROSAWA'S DREAMS (1990)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Product Description: Unfolding in a series of mythic vignettes, this late work by Akira Kurosawa brings eight of the beloved director’s own nighttime visions, informed by tales from Japanese folklore, to cinematic life. In a visually sumptuous journey through the master’s unconscious, tales of childlike wonder give way to apocalyptic visions: a young boy stumbles on a fox wedding in a forest; a soldier confronts the ghosts of the war dead; a power-plant meltdown smothers a seaside landscape in radioactive fumes. Interspersed with reflections on the redemptive power of art, including a richly textured tribute to Vincent van Gogh (played by Martin Scorsese), Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams is both a showcase for its maker’s imagination at its most unbridled and a deeply personal lament for a world at the mercy of human ignorance.

PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE (2002)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Product Description: Chaos lurks in every corner of this giddily off-kilter foray into romantic comedy by Paul Thomas Anderson. Struggling to cope with his erratic temper, novelty toilet plunger salesman Barry Egan (Adam Sandler, demonstrating remarkable versatility in his first dramatic role) spends his days collecting frequent-flyer-mile coupons and dodging the insults of his seven sisters. The promise of a new life emerges when Barry inadvertently attracts the affections of a mysterious woman named Lena (Emily Watson), but their budding relationship is threatened when he falls prey to the swindling operator of a phone sex line and her deranged boss (played with maniacal brio by Philip Seymour Hoffman). Fueled by the careening momentum of a baroque-futurist score by Jon Brion, the Cannes-award-winning Punch-Drunk Love channels the spirit of classic Hollywood musicals and the whimsy of Jacques Tati into an idiosyncratic ode to the delirium of new romance.

TIME AFTER TIME (1979)

Product Description: London 1893 is home to a killer with a macabre nickname... and also to a visionary genius who would write The Time Machine. But what if H.G. Wells' invention wasn't fiction? And what if Jack the Ripper escaped capture fleeing his own time to take refuge in ours - with Wells himself in pursuit?

From writer/director Nicholas Meyer, Time After Time is a marvelous entertainment of shivery suspense and sly social comment. In modern-day San Francisco, the Ripper (David Warner) finds our violent age to his liking. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) dislikes the brave new world of fast food and television, far from the utopia he envisioned. But he is cheered by the emancipation of women, particularly one irresistible banker (Mary Steenburgen). For mystery, romance and excitement, Time After Time is time well spent.

MACBETH (1948)

JUMP BACK TO TOP

Product Description: Something wicked this way comes in Orson Welles’ cinematic retelling of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Welles stars as the titular Macbeth—a doomed Scottish lord tragically undone by his own ambition. Welles’ noir-tinged interpretation bubbles over with supernatural prophecy and murderous intrigue, effectively mixing the use of shadow and oblique camera angles to achieve an ominous sense of a land in peril. Beautifully shot by John L. Russell (Psycho) and starring Orson Welles (who also adapted, produced and directed), Jeanette Nolan (The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance), Dan O’Herlihy (Robinson Crusoe), Roddy McDowall (How Green Was My Valley) and Alan Napier (TV’s Batman), Macbeth is an altogether unique interpretation of Shakespeare's Scottish play. This special Olive Signature edition includes both the original 1948 107-minute cut, replete with affected highland accents, and the 1950 pared-down 85-minute re-release that removed most of the accented dialogue.

Product Description: "One of Our Aircraft is Missing, from the writing/producing/directing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, 49th Parallel) is the very epitome of the propaganda films coming out of Britain during World War II.
