"The Birth of a Nation" is a historical drama based on the story of Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher in the antebellum South, who orchestrated a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831. This is actor Nate Parker's directorial debut. He also co-wrote and co-produced the film, and stars in the lead role.
The cast also includes Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Aunjanue Ellis, Mark Boone Junior, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller and Gabrielle Union.
The film premiered in competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and received the largest distribution deal in the festival's history when Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired it for $17.5 million. It also went on to win the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition.
"The Birth of a Nation" opens in theaters on October 7th.

"Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat's preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities--against himself and his fellow slaves--Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom."
