The sequel to Roland Emmerich's 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day" is moving forward and the first casting news just popped up this week. Jessie Usher ("When the Game Stands Tall") and Liam Hemsworth ("The Hunger Games") are in advanced negotiations for the lead roles.

Usher will star as the son of Will Smith's Captain Steven Hiller from the original, while Hemsworth will play the son-in-law of Bill Pullman's President Thomas J. Whitmore. From the original cast, Pullman is expected to return and Jeff Goldblum has already been confirmed, but Smith is a big question mark.

The story is rumored to focus on the aliens returning for revenge, but since they use wormholes to travel they will only spend a few weeks on the space road, while 20-25 years will have passed for the humans on Earth. The screenplay has been written by Carter Blanchard and Emmerich will return to direct.

"Independence Day 2" will be released on June 24, 2016.
