Box-Office: GONE GIRL and ANNABELLE Share the Crown

box-office-gone-girl-annabelle

In a surprising turn of events, both "Gone Girl" and "Annabelle" turned in great numbers and while the former took first place and the latter came in second, it was a very close race between the two films. David Fincher's mystery thriller, based on Gillian Flynn's novel, picked up $38 million in its opening weekend, more than half its budget. This is Fincher's biggest debut, followed at considerable distance by "Panic Room" ($30 million).

The horror film "Annabelle", a spin-off/prequel of sorts to last year's hit "The Conjuring", managed to take in $37 million, an impressive result considering its $6.5 million production budget. The other big release of the week, the Rapture-themed Nicolas Cage starrer "Left Behind" only scored a weak $6.8 million, one of the actor's worst debuts.

New Wide Releases: "Gone Girl", "Annabelle", "Left Behind".

Biggest Drop : "The Equalizer" (-44%)

Smallest Drop : "Guardians of the Galaxy" (-19%)
