Here's a movie you might have missed under all those flashy Hollywood mega-productions. The sci-fi thriller "Automata", directed by Gabe Ibáñez and starring Antonio Banderas, is a middle-budget homage to the dystopian genre, branded by most critics as a "Blade Runner" knock-off, but acknowledged for its technical merits. The film tells the story Jacq Vaucan (Banderas), an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation, who is tasked with investigating a possible case of robot manipulation. The robots are subject to the Laws of Robotics which you might remember from Asimov's "I, Robot" (or similar, anyway), and what Vaucan discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity. While not particularly a favorite among critics, the film is making its debut in some countries and is already in theaters in the U.S. (limited), and it might be worth checking out. The film also stars Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Dylan McDermott, Melanie Griffith, Robert Forster, Andy Nyman and the voice of Javier Bardem.
