Vanessa Hudgens Picture
Vanessa Hudgens is in early talks to star in the horror comedy "The Kitchen Sink" directed by Robbie Pickering ("Natural Selection") and written by Oren Uziel. The film is a "monster genre mash-up" and has been described as being "in the vein of Zombieland, [and the] story follows a group of teens who form an unlikely alliance with vampires and zombies in order to take on an alien army." If Hudgens nabs the role she would play "a popular teen who finds herself in danger when aliens invade her small town." The film also stars Denis Leary ("The Amazing Spider-Man"), Nicholas Braun ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower"), Mackenzie Davis ("Smashed"), Josh Fadem ("The Eric Andre Show") and Chris Zylka) ("Piranha 3DD ").

This is the reason why David needs a family to help him make it across the border and back without raising suspicions. To this end he recruits a cynical stripper (Aniston), a wannabe customer (Poulter) and a streetwise teen (Roberts). Get ready for some raunchy laughs all the way to Mexico and back. Still of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns

Today we have a new red-band trailer (via IGN) as well as six movie clips (via Collider) for the action film "2 Guns". The film is directed by Baltasar Kormakur ("Contraband") and it stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as DEA and U.S. naval intelligence agents, respectively, who end up on the run after a botched mission. Kormakur has stated that the film is a "pulpy comic adaptation that's probably closer to 48 Hrs. than Bad Boys.". Sounds good to me. The film also stars Paul Patton, Bill Paxton, Edward James Olmos and James Marsden. "2 Guns" opens on August 2, 2013.

Beverly Hills Cop Image

It looks like we're going to get a new "Beverly Hills Cop" sequel after all. CBS passed on the TV series written by Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") and starring Brandon T. Jackson as Axel Foley's son, so Paramount quikly moved in and hired "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to pen the script for "Beverly Hills Cop IV". Also, Eddie Murphy is onboard to reprise the role of Detriot cop Axel Foley. Deadline reported that "the newest installment in the film franchise was fueled by the interest sparked by the Beverly Hills Cop pilot this past season."

Vin Diesel was present at this year's Comic-Con spreading rumors that he is involved in a new Marvel superhero film. While there has been no official word as to what that film might be, it has been announced that Diesel will star in the action-adventure movie "World's Most Wanted" for Universal Pictures. The script is written by "Lair" video game writers Will Staples and Sean O'Keefe and is now being rewritten by Dan Mazeau ("Wrath of the Titans").

Michael J. Fox is returning to TV in a new comedy series called "The Michael J. Fox Show". Fox will star as Mike Henry, a newscaster with Parkinson’s disease who decides to go back to work after taking a few years off. "The Michael J. Fox Show" premieres on NBC on September 26th.

Lance Armstrong Biopic

There seems to be an epidemic of Lance Armstrong movies. The latest, involving the doping scandal, of course, is a Working Title production directed by Stephen Frears ("The Queen") and written by John Hodge ("Trainspotting"). According to Deadline, Ben Foster ("The Messenger", "Contraband") will play Armstrong in the film, that will focus on "Armstrong's career from his cancer ordeal to the scandal that brought him down." The other Lance Armstrong biopic to keep an eye out for is the one produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by Jay Roach ("Game Change").

Jean Claude Van Damme Kickboxer
Remakes and reboots are aplenty these days. Let's take a look at the latest announcements. Firstly, we have an announcement that a reboot of "The Butterfly Effecy" is in the works. The time-travel thriller was a hit and was Ashton Kutcher's first attempt at a dramatic role and it still is one of his most well known films. The original's script was written by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber, and it seems that Bress in onboard to pen the reboot as well.

We also have two remakes of some legendary Jean-Claude Van Damme flicks. "Bloodsport" will be remade with James McTeigue ("V for Vendetta") directing for Relativity Media, and "Kickboxer" is getting remade by Stephen Fung ("Tai Chi Zero") for Radar Pictures from a script by Jim McGrath and Dimitri Logothetis.

Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed

Sylvester Stallone will reprise the role of Rocky Balboa in a spinoff that will focus on Apollo Creed's grandson. Creed was Rocky's opponent in the first two movies and later became his friend, until he was killed by russian boxer Ivan Drago in "Rocky IV". The spinoff, titled "Creed", will be directed by "Fruitvale Station" director Ryan Coogler and will star Michael B. Jordan ("Chronicle") in the lead role. Here is the synopsis for the film:
"Raised in an upper-crust home thanks to the ring riches earned by his grandfather, the young man doesn’t have to box and his family doesn’t want him to. Yet, he has the natural instinct and gifts and potential that made his grandfather the heavyweight champion until Rocky Balboa took his crown in 1979′s Rocky II. Creed’s grandson needs a mentor and turns to Balboa, who is out of boxing completely and not eager to return."

Star Wars Logo

Plenty of good news for "Star Wars" fans this past week. "Star Wars: Episode VII" executive producer Kathleen Kennedy has been rather generous with the updates during her appearance at Star Wars Celebration Europe. The first important update is that franchise composer John Williams will return to score the sequel. Kennedy stated that "His music just gives me the chills. It's so important for the saga, and we're really excited he's a part of it. Furthermore, Williams appeared in a pre-recorded video in which he spoke about how delighted he was to be returning to the saga. Here is the video:

Kathleen Kennedy also went on to discuss elements of the "Star Wars: Episode VII" production. She revealed that she is involved in extensive story meetings with director J.J. Abrams and the writers, including Lawrence Kasdan ("Empire Strikes Back"), and that the emphasis will be on story and characters, not visual effects. And as far as CGI goes, Kennedy stated that they will work hard to mix CG with practical effects and real locations.
"The story and characters are all we’re talking about right now. We have an amazing team at ILM, who can create fantastic effects, but if we don’t have a great story and characters, the effects mean nothing. I do think making huge popular culture – and I’ve had the good fortune to be a part of a lot it – is really hard to do and get right. And if you don’t spend the time you need on developing characters, and finding stories, complicated stories, the audience gets tired because they think they’re seeing the same thing again and again.

There's nothing more exciting than to be involved in that kind of technological innovation. When the story ideas you're working on contribute to pushing the technology, I really think that's what's so exciting about our business. It's when the imagination drives innovation and new design.

It's a conversation we're having all the time in the development of Episode VII. Looking at all the Star Wars movies and getting a feel for what even some of the early films did, combining real locations and special effects – that's something we're looking very seriously at. So we're going to find some very cool locations that we're going to use in support of Episode VII and I think we're probably going to end up using every single tool in the toolbox to create the look of these movies.

[Reffering to what is in the "toolbox"] It's using model makers; it's using real droids; it's taking advantage of artwork that you actually can touch and feel. And we want to do that in combination with CG effects. We figure that's what will make it real."

The Wolverine Box Office

"The Wolverine", starring Hugh Jackman, surprised no one as it dominated the box-office this weekend, but there's still cause for some worries as the superhero flick only grossed $55 million domestically, a low margin for the X-Men franchise. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" opened with $85 million in 2009 and the only other modest opening weekends in the Marvel franchise are 2000's "X-Men" ($54 million) and 2011's "X-Men: First Class" ($55 million). Still, "The Wolverine" managed to perform much better overseas, grossing $86 million from 126 countries, which is the all-time best foreign opening for an X-Men movie.

Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth in Romeo and Juliet

The film also features a strong supporting cast which includes Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard, Damian Lewis, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Natascha McElhone. "Elysium" also stars Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, Sharlto Copley and William Fichtner. The release date is August 9, 2013.

Still of the Riddick motion comic

A very cool animated prequel has been released for the upcoming "Riddick" starring Vin Diesel. It's actually a motion comic titled "Blindsided" and it details events that take place between "The Chronicles of Riddick" and the upcoming sequel. As the animated prequel and trailers suggest, we can surely expect a return to Riddick's dark side in the new film directed by David Twohy ("Pitch Black"). The film also stars Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff and Dave Bautista. "Riddick" opens on September 6, 2013.

Photo of Rosamund Pike
Rosamund Pike is set to star in David Fincher's "Gone Girl", an adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel about a woman (Pike) who goes missing on her fifth wedding anniversary, leaving her husband as the main suspect in her disappearance. Ben Affleck will star as the woman's husband and actors Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry are also being considered for supporting roles. Here is the synopsis for "Gone Girl"
"Marriage can be a real killer.

One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. TheChicago Tribune proclaimed that her work “draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction.” Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer? As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around."

Photo of James McAvoy

James McAvoy has signed on to play doctor Victor Frankenstein in director Paul McGuigan's "Frankenstein", which is being touted as a daring new version of Mary Shelley's novel. The film's protagonist, however, will be Frankenstein's trusty hunchbacked lab assistant Igor, who will be played by Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe. The funny thing is that Igor was not part of Shelley's novel, so I guess the filmmakers aren't really looking to present a faithful adaptation of the book. The script has been written by Max Landis ("Chronicle") and the writer has described the project as being the definitive story about Igor's inception. So, again, not really about Mary Shelley's novel.

Photo of Abigail Breslin

Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine", "The Call") will play Arnold Schwarzenegger's undead-infected daughter in the zombie movie "Maggie". The film's story focuses on the father's efforts to find a cure for his daughter who has been infected and is slowly turning into a zombie. Chloe Grace Moretz had been considered at one point for the young girl's role. The film is directed by commercial director Henry Hobson and production starts this fall.

Melissa McCarthy Picture

Melissa McCarthy is in talks to star for a third time in a comedy directed by Paul Feig ("The Heat", "Bridesmaids"). The film is called "Susan Cooper" and if McCarthy ends up nabbing the role she will star as a female James Bond-type, quite possibly for several installments as the filmmakers intend the film to be a franchise-starter. Feig wrote the script and the tone is said to be similar to that of his recent hit "The Heat" which teamed up McCarthy and Sandra Bullock.

Insidious 2 Movie Clips and Poster

The first two movie clips and two new posters have been released for the horror sequel "Insidious: Chapter 2". The film is directed by James Wan ("Saw", "The Conjuring") and it continues the story of the Lambert family as they try to figure out the mysteries behind the haunting in the first film. Still of Sandra Bullock in Gravity

Three new teaser trailers and three banner posters for Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" have been released. The intense trailers offer further insight into what we can expect from Cuaron's ambitious sci-fi adventure and it looks great and terrifying at the same time. Sandra Bullock stars as a scientist who ends up drifting into outer space after a catastrophic accident destroys the NASA crew's shuttle. "Gravity" opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D October 4th.

Dane DeHaan in Metallica Through the Never 3D

A new trailer and poster have been released for the IMAX 3D concert movie "Metallica Through the Never". The film is an unique mix of Metallica concert footage and a fictional narrative which features breakout star Dane DeHaan ("Chronicle", "The Amazing Spider-Man 2") as the band's crew member sent out on an errand during the Metallica live concert, which turns out to be much more complicated and surreal than expected. "Metallica Through the Never" is directed by Nimrod Antal ("Predators", "Kontroll"). The release dates are October 4, 2013 for the regular release and September 27, 2013 for the IMAX 3D version.

Snowpiercer Chris Evans Picture

The final trailer and the complete animated prequel for director Joon-ho Bong's sci-fi thriller "Snowpiercer" have been released. The trailer doesn't add much to what we've seen already and it's very short. I rather enjoy the way the filmmakers tease without showing everything. The animated prequel is very interesting, however, as it depicts the events leading up to the train's journey including explanations about what caused the new ice age and the desperate battles fought by people trying to get on board the train. "Snowpiercer" features an international all-star cast which includes Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, Ed Harris, Ewen Bremner, Octavia Spencer, Kang-ho Song and Ko Asung. The film will open on August 1, 2013 in South Korea, but there is no US release date.

Superman versus Batman 2015

Yesterday I wrote about the 2015 "Man of Steel" sequel and how it's going to feature both Superman (played by Henry Cavill) and Batman (actor unknown), and it will be directed by Zack Snyder and written by David S. Goyer. I have a quick update to that bit of news. Apparently, Goyer dropped the bomb about the sequel's title at the Comic-Con by saying: "We’re actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman". The Internet is currently buzzing about the title, which despite sounding silly, like some sort of monster mash-up, it also makes perfect sense as a marketing device. Wouldn't you want to see a movie with both Superman and Batman in the title ? It also makes it very clear what the movie is about without a crazy title ("Quantum of Solace" anyone ?). Stay tuned for more updates, because I'm sure there will be plenty.

Christopher Walken Picture
Christopher Walken ("Seven Psychopaths") will star in Clint Eastwood's new film "Jersey Boys". The film is an adaptation of the Tony-winning hit stage musical of the same name. Walken will play Jersey mobster Angelo "Gyp" DeCarlo, who helps a group of young singers build their careers and stay away from a life of organized crime. The script is written by Marshall Brickman ("Annie Hall") and Rick Elice. The production is set to begin in September and filming will take place in Los Angeles.

Jessica Alba Picture
Jessica Alba has joined the cast of the action comedy "Stretch". The film is directed by Joe Carnahan ("Narc", "The Grey") and it stars Patrick Wilson ("The Conjuring") as a limo driver struggling to pay off a gambling debt when he picks up a deranged billionaire (Chris Pine) whose special requests get darker as the night rolls on. The film also stars Ed Helms ("The Hangover") and Brooklyn Decker ("Battleship"). "Stretch" opens on March 21, 2014.

Sascha Baron Cohen Picture
Sacha Baron Cohen has dropped out of the Freddy Mercury biopic. According to several reports, Cohen departed the project over creative differences with the Queen band members, who have the last word when it comes to script and director approval. Cohen apparently wanted the film to be an uncompromising R-rated biopic, while the band members wanted a family-friendly PG flick. Peronally, I think they could have reached a compromise on this. Maybe PG and R are too drastic, but a lot of biopics have been rated PG-13 and still managed to be quite uncompromising and thorough, for example "Walk the Line" and "Ray". Other problems seemed to revolve around the selection of a director. Reports state that the cited "creative differences" also made it impossible to get "Les Miserables" director Tom Hooper on the job. The project looks doomed at the moment with no leading actor, or director, and if the "creative differences" persist, then it's quite possible that the biopic will never get made.

Director Joss Whedon revealed at this year's Comic-Con Marvel panel, that the sequel to "The Avengers" will be called "The Avengers: Age of Ultron". Although everyone believed Whedon was going to use the storyline from the "Age of Ultron" book, the director made it clear that the villain Ultron will be featured in the film, but his origin story will be different from the comics. This also means that Henry Pym aka Ant-Man will also be absent from the sequel, although Marvel is working on an Ant-Man movie which will be released on November 6, 2015. "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" will be released on May 1, 2015 and according to Whedon, the sequel will be darker and will feature more sci-fi elements. Here are selections from Joss Whedon's clarifications:
"A lot of people—because we called it Age of Ultron and there was a book, Age of Ultron just recently—assumed that was the storyline we are doing, which is not the case. We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron. The other thing is, in the origin story, there was Hank Pym. So a lot of people assumed that he was going to be in the mix, but he’s not. Because we’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside. Ultron was their chief villain. He’s been the Avengers villain for so long. I was amazed anybody was surprised that it was going to be him in the movie. We are crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from the Avengers we already know about.

It’s a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house. There’s a science fiction element that I think is a bit stronger than the other film… It is very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place, not just in America, but in the world.

Part of the fun for me this time around is writing Hawkeye. Because he did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around scowly for most of the movie last time. So now it’s nice to actually have the character there and really see him interact with the other guys. "

Man of Steel Banner Poster

The Comic-Con this year generated a lot of buzz about the "Man of Steel" sequel. Everyone already knew that a sequel was in the works, but what few saw coming is that the new movie will feature both Superman and Batman. Henry Cavill will return as Clark Kent/Superman, but the big mystery is who will play Batman since Christian Bale ended his work as the Dark Knight in Christopher Nolan's trilogy and has no plans to return. About a year ago, Warner Bros. was talking about rebooting Batman with a new actor and with no "Justice League" movie in sight, it seems that this will be as close as DC and WB will get to having more than one of their superheroes in a movie at the same time. The "Man of Steel" sequel will be directed by Zack Snyder and written by David S. Goyer. The sequel is scheduled for release in Summer 2015. Here is the official press release:
"On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcoming film brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast.

Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015.

Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.”

Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment, noted,“Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack’s continuing vision for the DC Universe.”

Zack Snyder, who made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con today, breaking the news to audiences there, later said, “I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”

The new film brings back Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers. This time, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers, along with Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan.

Thomas offered, “Whilst our ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack’s fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction. His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe and we can’t wait to see what Zack does with these characters.”

The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment."

Tom Hanks Robert Langdon Inferno

Tom Hanks and Ron Howard will team up once again for a Dan Brown adaptation. After working together on "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels & Demons", the duo will next adapt Brown's novel "Inferno" in which Robert Langdon becomes entangled in a mystery involving "Dante's Inferno", dealing once more with sophisticated classic art riddles. Although it was initially believed that "The Last Symbol" will be the third installment in the Langdon series, Sony decided not to move forward with that book and instead picked up "Inferno" which was released this year in May. Screenwriter David Koepp will return to write the screenplay for the sequel. Here is the synopsis for "Inferno":
"In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology, Robert Langdon, is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces . . . Dante’s Inferno.

Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust . . . before the world is irrevocably altered."

Photo of Vera Farmiga and James Wan on the set of The Conjuring

James Wan's hugely successful horror "The Conjuring" performed better than anyone expected it to, so Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel and is hoping to build it into a franchise. The film was focused on the true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), a husband and wife team of paranormal investigators. The Warrens dealt with numerous other cases of supernatural encounters, so there should be plenty of stories for several sequels. James Wan is currently involved in directing "Fast & Furious 7" and has stated his desire to leave the horror genre behind, so it's unlikely that he will direct "The Conjuring" sequel.
