CASTING NEWS: Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Pine, Amanda Seyfried

Reese Witherspoon has joined the cast of Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pychon's novel "Inherent Vice". While there is no information regarding what Witherspoon's role will be, it is known that the film stars Joaquin Phoenix as 1970s pot-smoking private detective Larry "Doc" Sportello, who is investigating the alleged kidnapping of a whoman he used to date. Jena Malone, Martin Short, Benicio Del Toro and Owen Wilson have also joined the cast. The film is expected to be released in 2014.

Scarlett Johansson Picture

Scarlett Johansson will star in the indie comedy "Chef". The film is written and directed by Jon Favreau ("Iron Man") who also stars in the lead role of Carl Casper, a chef who loses his job and starts a food truck business in the hope of reclaiming his artistic promise and reconnect with his estranged family. Johansson will play a supporting role. The cast also includes Robert Downey Jr., Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo and Bobby Cannavale.

Chris Pine Amanda Seyfried Chewitel Ejiofor

Chris Pine ("Star Trek"), Amanda Seyfried ("Les Miserables") and Chiwetel Ejiofor ("2012") will star in the adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien's novel "Z for Zachariah" about a sixteen-year-old girl who survives a nuclear war in a small American town. Toby Maguire has also joined the cast. Filming begins in August. Here is the official press release:
"Material Pictures and Zik Zak Filmworks are pleased to announce Chris Pine, Amanda Seyfried, and Chewitel Ejiofor have joined the cast of Z FOR ZACHARIAH. The film will be directed by Craig Zobel (The Great World of Sound, Compliance) from a script penned by Nissar Modi. Material Pictures’ Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe will produce alongside Zik Zak Filmworks’ SkĂșli Malmquist, Thor Sigurjonsson and Palomar Pictures’ Joni Sighvatsson. Gary Ross and Lucky Hat Entertainment’s Stephen Bannatyne will executive produce, along with Silver Reel’s Claudia Bluemhuber and Lotus Entertainment’s Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson. Lotus will commence international sales at Cannes. CAA arranged financing for the project, and CAA and WME will co-represent domestic rights.

An adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s classic science fiction novel of the same name, Z FOR ZACHARIAH is a psychological thriller about a girl who believes she is the only survivor after a devastating nuclear event, but comes to learn she is not alone.

“Everyone at Material Pictures and Zik Zak Filmworks is thrilled Z for Zachariah has attracted such a dynamic and talented cast,” said Maguire. “With Modi’s enthralling script and the vision Zobel has for the film, we’re excited to bring such a captivating story to audiences.”

The project will begin shooting in August."
