Paul Thomas Anderson's much-hyped and eagerly awaited drama "The Master" has registered its first major awards season victory at the Venice Film Festival. The movie received the awards for Best Director and Best Actor (shared between Joaquin Pheonix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman). The award for Best Picture initially went to "The Master", but because the festival's rules only allow a movie to win no more than two major awards, the jury chose to present the Golden Lion to Kim-Ki Duk's "Pieta". The award for Best Actress was presented to Hadas Yaron for her performance in "Fill the Void". Olivier Assayas won the award for Best Screenplay for "Something in the Air" and the Special Jury Award went to Ulrich Seidl's "Paradise: Faith".
