New on DVD & Blu-Ray : RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011)

Synopsis: Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a revolution; an action-packed epic featuring stunning visual effects and creatures unlike anything ever seen before. At the story's heart is Caesar (Andy Serkis), a chimpanzee who gains human-like intelligence and emotions from an experimental drug. Raised like a child by the drug's creator (James Franco), Caesar ultimately finds himself taken from the humans he loves and imprisoned. Seeking justice, Caesar assembles a simian army and escapes -- putting man and primate on a collision course that could change the planet forever.

What to Expect : An excellent blockbuster. On the one hand, it's the typical apocalyptic sci-fi actioner, but on the other hand, it's an unusually heartfelt drama working with three-dimensional character (although there was room for more character developement). Andy Serkis steals the show with his amazing motion-capture work for the revolutionary chimp. There's a lot of Oscar buzz built around Serkis' performance, but I honestly feel it should have been his performance as Gollum that should have earned him a nomination. "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is a solid epic, setting a promising stage for future sequels and bringing back some of that lost "Planet of the Apes" vibe that spawned the original 5-movie franchise.
