Official Synopsis : Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland). Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth... Melancholia is a psychological disaster movie from director Lars von Trier.
Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi
What to Expect : Lars von Trier's brooding sci-fi drama is here and it's exactly the dark visceral and well cast cinematic event you've been expecting. It doesn't even come close to the controversy of Trier's "Antichrist", but you can expect the same kind of surreal soul-searching minus the violence and gore. Not for everyone, though. LIMITED RELEASE
Critical Response : Positive. It was almost certain that Trier's movie will receive a warm welcome in the US after being so appreciated at Cannes. "Melancholia" received high grades for its portrayal of apocalyptic angst through clever writing and moody visuals. The cast also received high praises, with Kirsten Dunst in particular receiving lots of positive notices. Rated 80% on Rottentomatoes.com from 86 positive and 22 negative reviews.
