Official Synopsis : A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Sports, Drama
What to Expect : "Rocky" with robot boxers. Dreamworks marketed the movie as being a " a gritty, white-knuckle, action ride", although I'm not sure about the "gritty" part. Maybe half-gritty is closer to the truth, only because the sci-fi boxing matches have that special dystopian feel to them, but this is still a Disney-produced movie, so expect it to be family-friendly despite the violence. Only worth it if you really, really love robots...or Hugh Jackman (or Evangeline Lilly). Produced by Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis.
Critical Response : Mixed. Despite some positive early reviews, the balance slowly tilted towards the negative and just ended up hanging around a sort of mixed equilibrium. The mixed/positive reviews tried to overlook its cliches, overly generic story and lack of solid thrills that the negative ones pointed out. These leniant reviewers enjoyed the cheesy plot and feel-good mood as well as the CGI robot battles. Still, the reception is far from warm, but it probably won't matter anyway, because I'm sure it will earn a lot of money.
