In Theaters : FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN (2011)

Official Synopsis : To an outsider, the Taylors are the very picture of the successful American family: Charles (Willem Dafoe) is a tenured professor on track to become university president, son Michael (Ryan Reynolds) is a prolific and well-known romance novelist, daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio) is poised to enter a prestigious law school, and on the day we are introduced to them, matriarch Lisa (Julia Roberts) will graduate from college-decades after leaving to raise her children. But when a serious accident interrupts the celebration, the far more nuanced reality of this Midwestern family's history and relationships come to light.

Genre: Drama

What to Expect : Syrupy melodrama about a dysfunctional family. If you've seen this kind of movie a hundred times and still want more, this grim family drama will please you, so to speak. This movie was actually made in 2008 and it took three years to find someone interested in distributing it. I guess that says something. LIMITED RELEASE

Critical Response : Negative. Despite the solid cast and what would appear to be a select gathering of dysfunctional characters that are usually the stuff of award-winning dramas, this movie failed to impress critics who bashed director Dennis Lee for his dull handling of the story. Most remarked that the mvoie abounds in cliches and delivers flat dialogue and characters. Rated 20% on Rottentomatoes.com from 9 positive and 36 negative reviews.
