In Theaters : ANONYMOUS (2011)

Official Synopsis : Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Sigmund Freud, namely: who actually created the body of work credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when scandalous political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles lusting for the power of the throne were brought to light in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

Genre: Drama

What to Expect : A slick period piece conspiracy drama with a delightful cast and a very interesting premise. English court scheming has never been this interesting. A big suprise from the destroyer of worlds, Ronald Emmerich.

Critical Response : Mixed. Ronald Emmerich made critics question his methods once again, but the overall reception is not necessarily as bad as it was for his other movies like "2012", or "The Day After Tomorror". While some thought "Anonymous" is not as smart as it thinks it is, they have conceded the fact that it's a visual stunner, the cast brings a lot of weight to the movie's narrative and it does have a series of impressive scenes that work much better than expected. Roger Ebert was among those who gave the movie a very positive review and awarded it 3.5 out of 4 stars. Rated 44% on Rottentomatoes.com from 51 positive and 65 negative reviews.
