In Theaters, May 27, 2011 : TREE OF LIFE

Official Synopsis : From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. -- (C) Fox Searchlight

What to Expect : If you're familiar with Terrence Malick's movies you'll know exactly what to expect and more. It's impressionistic. It's existential. It's slow. It's serious. It's art. It makes up its own filmmaking rules. It will blow your mind away or bore you to death. At this point, mentioning that the movie won this year's Palme D'Or at Cannes, or that Brad Pitt turns in a great performance, won't influence your decision much.

Critical Response : While the reception at Cannes was mixed, with some booing, while others cheered, no such division existed with the US critics. An overwhelming wave of positive critical response recommends this movie. Claudia Puig of USA Today argued that "Some will dismiss its overarching themes and elliptical visuals as pretentious. Others might question its quasi-biblical images. But the artistry in every frame is undeniable." A mixed opinion comes from Leonard Maltin who says that '"The Tree of Life" is a film in which the parts are greater than the whole". He mentions the wonderful cinematography and the vivid portrayal of emotions, but only recommends the movie to a "discerning and adventurous filmgoer". And if you must hear a negative reaction, here's Matt Singer from IFC.com who comments that the movie feels like "watching a magician perform one trick over and over again for 138 minutes". "Tree of Life" is currently 85% fresh on Rottentomatoes.com with 61 positive reviews and 11 negative ones.
